Opsview is an open source network, server and application monitoring tool. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Opsview uses Nagios Core as its monitoring engine and incorporates Nagvis, NagiosGraph, MRTG, NMIS into a single tool. Opsview provides a web user interface that allows system administrators to access monitoring views and configure monitoring settings. Features include Nagios Core compatibility, distributed monitoring, flexible status views, data warehouse and reporting. Opsview is basicly on web frontend for Nagios. It delivers GUI for both monitoring and configuration.

One of the best things about it is the integration of various 3rd party applications. It has MRTG, NagVis, NMIS, NagiosGraph, SMS senders, NDO and much more. The installation may not be the easiest but after you finish it – it works! Some extra configuration may be required for extra modules (like for NagVis). Also – because it uses Nagios as the monitoring engine – you can add all the cool stuff you could add to a standard Nagios installation. And its fast.
Another upshot is the implemented distributed monitoring solution. Adding slave monitoring nodes is not a problem here.
It also has its drawbacks. It has no integrated application for NetFlow monitoring. Another downside is lack of batch host configuration. Every single host has to entered manually via GUI. Opsview Community Edition is free, open source and is available as a virtual appliance for VMware.

Opsview adds enhancements to notifications and alerting (both in terms of controls and methods), support for SNMPv3 with MRTG, flap detection, faster importing and improved uptime checks. In addition to the VMware appliance, Opsview Community Edition can be downloaded as source or binaries for RHEL , CentOS , Debian, Ubuntu and Solaris .

Normally, an advanced management tool like Opsview would be difficult to install and configure, however most of the pain of installation is eliminated with the virtual appliance version of the product, where initial setup takes only a matter of minutes.

You can review this post to learn how to install it.

The browser-based GUI is informative and easy to navigate, making it a snap to add devices to be monitored and to define dashboards that offer meaningful information. The Community edition is offered under a GPL licence, while a more advanced version of the product that includes support is offered under a subscription model. Managers of smaller, simpler networks may find everything in the free version to meet their needs.

We install, configure and implement awesome monitoring system for any IT or hosting infrastructure size, don’t hesitate to ask us for help or freelancing tasks or share it with your friends.
